Using Independent Contractors Instead of Employees
Misinformation about using independent contractors is rampant in Colorado’s business community. A business can run into trouble when it structures its workforce without understanding Colorado and federal laws on independent contractors and employees. Federal and state agencies audit businesses to determine whether their independent contractors must be reclassified to employees. The answer usually is Yes. This workshop was designed to ensure business owners understand:
- the odds that they will be audited
- what will happen if they receive an audit notice, and the purpose of the audits
- what happens if they fail the audit
- what they can do to reduce the risk of retroactive tax assessments and penalties
